A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned by the jury at an inquest held last evening by the South Herefordshire Coroner (Mr. E. L. Wallis) on Edward Richard Horton (57), of Martin's Cottage, Eastnor, near Ledbury, who was discovered hanging dead from beam in an outhouse of his home on Wednesday morning. The widow stated that after bringing her cup of tea to her bedroom about 6.30 a.m., Horton kissed her and said, “Good-bye, old pet," presumably before going to work usual. Shortly afterwards she found him dead. It was stated that Horton was employed at Hollybush Quarries quarryman, on the day previous to the tragedy all the workmen had been informed of a change in the ownership of the quarry, but that probably all the men would be retained at their work. This appeared to worry him, as he was afraid of being dismissed. Medical evidence stated that he was depressed 3 had been unable sleep. Addressing the jury the Coroner observed: "the idea that suicide is going to end a man's troubles mad idea. Where is the religion of which we hear so much? This man had a comfortable home, but the spectre of unemployment appeared to him." Published: Saturday 16 June 1934
